Research Notes: The word "Mac Millan" or "Mc Millan" has three definitions by as many authors. Another authority says the name signifies "son of the hills," Mac meaning son, Millan meaning hills or highlands. Still another authority claims that the name is from the Gaelic "MacMhaoilavin," signifying "son of the bald (or bare) man."

• Newspaper Article: Trenton Evening Times, 2 Aug 1915, Jamesburg, Middlesex Co., NJ. JAMESBURG Aug 2. At the meeting of the Board of Managers of the State Home for Boys scheduled for tomorrow night it is expected that a new superintendent to succeed John C. Kalleen, present head, will be chosen. It is understood that there are several candidates for the position. Mr. Kalleen was born in New York City and was educated in the public schools of that city. He first engaged in institutional work in 1873 at the Illinois State Reformatory where he was employed as an officer for several years. His work in Illinois attracted the attention of the Board of Managers of the Nashville Tenn. Industrial Institution and he was engaged as Deputy Superintendent and Financial Officer. He remained in the South for five years.
Mr. Kalleen was sought by another institution in Tennessee when in need of an executive for a correctional home. He was chosen head of a new school conducted by religious organizations. To the system he inaugurated is attributed the success of the place. His next charge was at the District of Columbia Industrial Home, Washington, D.C. where he remained for some years before coming to Jamesburg.

Notes and Events:

• Immigration: to America from Wόrtemberg, Germany, Before 1755.

• Note: "Apparently came to this country prior to 1775. Family tradition says that he came from the Duchy of Wurtemberg, though no definite information is in hand on this point."

Owned land in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

Member St. John's Lutheran Church on the corner of Archdale Street and Clifford Street (formerly Dutch Church Alley).

One of the founding members of the German Fusiliers, organized in 1755. In 1779 this military company served gallantly at the siege of Savannah.

The 'German Friendly Society', a charitable and social organization, was organized in 1766 by Michael Kalteisen, a member of the Board of Vestry of St. John's, and its original membership came from St. John's Lutheran Church. Christian Belser served as president of the society in 1792.

• Info: Information from Freeman Belser to Howard Delwin Moore, Jr. The sand hills refer to the "High Hills of Santee," which is in Sumter
County, South Carolina. I think that there are a couple of books written on
it. According to their descendants, they were some of the most prominant
families in South Carolina - Mannings, Richardsons, Bakers. If you look at a
map of South Carolina, the High Hills refer to the elevated land east of the
Wateree River. The hills looked out over the valley.

Christian Belser was the first Belser to arrive in South Carolina. His son,
Jacob, moved the family to the High Hills after his father's death. Jacob
Belser's old plantation is now Poinsett State Park.

• American Revolution Note: Christian Belser appears on the rolls as one of the original one hundred and thirty-seven Germans organized under the name of the German Fusiliers in 1774. During the years of 1776 and 1777 the Fusiliers were constantly in active service in and around Charleston. In 1979, they were called upon at the Siege and Battle of Savannah, where Christian appears on the muster roll as one of the four Sergeants.

OF
MR. CHRISTIAN BELSER
Who departed this life
April 3rd, 1812, aged 59 years
Through the vicissitudes of a long life,
he manifested an unalterable
attachment to the Christian charactor.
He was a man of most benevolent humanity,
just and upright in all his transactions.
Of soul sincere, of honour unstained,
in his manners unaffected, he lived beloved,
and died deservedly regretted.

Christian married Anna Maria "Mary" Bromiller on 27 Jan 1778 in St John's Lutheran Church, Charleston, SC.

Marriage Notes and Events:

• Marriage Note: from the records of Howard Delwin Moore, Jr:According to material in the Latter Day Saints library, Christian Belser and
Maria Muller were married in St John's Lutheran Church in Charleston, SC on
January 27, 1778. Evidently she used the name Muller/Miller when she
followed Christian Belser to America. It's odd that they were married during
the Rev. War. She must have immigrated just prior to 1776, since the British
mounted an unsuccessful attact on Charleston in 1776 and it was probably
blockaded after that date.

Children from this marriage were:

          i.   Louisa Belser (born before 1800 in South Carolina - died in South Carolina)

         ii.   Harriet C. Belser

        iii.   Elizabeth Ann Belser

35. Anna Maria "Mary" Bromiller 6 was born from 1760 to 1761 in Wόrtemberg, Germany, died on 21 Jun 1842,at age 82, and was buried in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Charleston, SC.

Notes and Events:

• Note: Said to have been first cousin of her husband.

According to material in the Latter Day Saints library, Christian Belser and
Maria Muller were married in St John's Lutheran Church in Charleston, SC on
January 27, 1778. Evidently she used the name Muller/Miller when she
followed Christian Belser to America.

In the early 1800's, Maria Miller applied for a revolutionary war pension
citing the service record of her husband, Christian Belser, as being at the
siege of Savanna and also the siege of Charleston when it fell to the
British. He was 4th Sergeant of the Charleston German Fusileers. According
to reports this unit fought bravely at Savannah, although the city fell to
the British due to some American blunders. The pension record shows her name
as Bromiller or Miller.

• Burial Notes: South-central part of St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery, on Archdale and Clifford Streets, Charleston, South Carolina. This churchyard abuts the churchyard of an adjacent church and the Belsers are buried near the division line. Gravestone indicates death at age 82.

His was one of the cases of Revolutionary Claims rejected by the Congressional Committee on claims in 1842, with the statement that, "His name is not on any roll now to be found, nor was he paid, by Va., or the U. S. for any service. It is altogether impossible he could have performed a service of these years, though his heirs were allowed the bounty of 4000 acres for that service, Sep. 1, 1838." (Rep. 1063, 27 Cong., 2 Sess., Aug. 2, 1842, p. 27.)
To this report the Cong. Committe on Public Lands replied; (Rep. 457, 28 Cong., 1 Sess., May 2, 1844, p. 139.)
"In the case of Capt. Francis Conway, he was proved to have been in the minute service in Sept., 1775, and for more than three years thereafter. A reference to the executive journal of Sept. 10, 1776, showed him to have been commissioned Lieutenant on that day in the regular service."

• Obituary: Fredericksburg Virginia Herald, 11 Mar 1790. "On Friday last died, of a short illness, Mrs. Eliza (sic) Fitzhugh, of Stafford County, in the 61st year of her age. She was the mother of thirteen children, all of them bred up and settled out in that regular decent manner as to the patterns of sobriety, industry, and good behaviour to all around them; these, with their children, amount in the number of 54. And what is very remarkable, that amisdt all the cares, troubles and difficulties, of so laborious a task, and the additonal misfortune of her husband being blind for near twenty years, she lived with him in so constant a tenor of conjugal affection, that not a harsh word or untoward expression ever passed between them; such are the comforts of the matrimonial state when rightly conducted. Her loss is much deplored by her acquaintances and affectionate children. but it is and must be peculiarly distressing to her surviving husband, who has now no one left to live with him to cheer the melancholy residue of his days of darkness"

Alice married Maj. John Fitzhugh on 30 Oct 1746 in Bedford, Stafford Co., VA.
